This sign tells the history of the church - originally built in 1521 by the Portuguese, then remodelled by the Dutch. When the British took it over, they used it to store gunpowder. A statue of St. Francis Xavier was built here, as this was where he was buried before his body was exhumed and moved to Goa. Interestingly, we visited the church that houses his 'body' in Old Goa when we were in India.
